Should I Drain My Pond In Winter To Avoid Costs Involved With Spring Cleaning?

November 15, 2022 by Mainak Leave a Comment

“Should I drain my pond in winter?” is the question some people ask just as the winter is about to arrive. If you want to keep your fish healthy, pond cleaning is a step you cannot avoid, just like winterizing the pond. Cleaning your pond is a bit of work, but we will try to make it easy for you. If you start early and do things properly, you will not suffer as much.

Pond Spring Cleaning Considerations

  1. Whether or not you have done winterization, there is still some work left for you to do during spring. When the temperature rises and the ice melts, you must start cleaning the water.
  2. Take your time and do not start pond spring cleaning if there is still ice on the pond. Do not try to remove the ice by force. Please wait for it to melt completely, then start the process. Once no ice can be seen, and the fish start coming up, you can start using the tools.
  3. If you have been using a de-icer, it is time to remove it. The pond will automatically reach its average temperature.
  4. You can begin using the pond pump and filters. Before switching them on, clean them and get rid of any dirt. If you have a fountain, you can also turn that on.
  5. How much cleaning needs to be done depends on how well you cleaned the pond while winterizing. If you have cleaned all the dirt and leaves properly, then during spring, you might not need to clean too hard.
  6. Use a wet/dry vacuum (a.k.a. shop-vac) to clean the pond water to make the process easier and faster. It will also ensure you keep the upper and lower layers of water distinct.
  7. During the cold weather, your fish likely have become weaker, and their immune system has also decreased. The fish in your pond may have gotten parasites or contracted external bacterial infections. It’s important to properly diagnose the problem your fish are suffering from before starting any treatment, as some conditions may have similar symptoms but require different treatments. Consult with a veterinarian or a local aquarium store for proper diagnosis and treatment options.
  8. Install a UV clarifier to get rid of algae that might have developed. It is safe for fish and reduces harmful bacteria. You can also put in a natural algae deterrent for maximum algae prevention.
  9. Once the cleaning is done, you can top up the pond system by adding extra beneficial bacteria. This works better in warm temperatures and is essential for a balanced ecosystem.
  10. At this point, you can slowly increase the food quantity of the fish. With the rising temperature, their metabolism system will also start to improve.

How to deep clean a pond?

Give your pond a deep cleaning this spring by following these simple steps:

  1. Before plumbing the water out, take out the fish and keep them in a holding tank using a net.
  2. Drain the pond water by using a clean-out pump. Place it at the deepest part of the pond and drain it in your yard.
  3. Relocate the pump 2 to 3 times, so no water is left behind.
  4. Rinse the inside of the pond with pressure water to remove the debris from the rocks.
  5. Scrub away the algae from the rocks but don’t try to scrub all. Some algae is essential for the ecosystem.
  6. After scrubbing using a garden hose, rinse the pond.
  7. After that, you can fill the pond again with water and add those fish to the pond once the temperature is adjusted.

How to maintain a fish pond?

  1. Check the skimmer basket twice or thrice a day and remove the leaves.
  2. You can put a net over the pond to keep the leaves from getting into the water.
  3. Add bacteria to maintain the ecosystem, and you can do it for 1 minute every week or 5 minutes every two weeks.
  4. Feed the fish daily. During winters, you can decrease the intervals.
  5. Check the water level once a week. Keep on the water as it keeps evaporating, especially during summer. This will only take 5-10 minutes.
  6. If you have plants around the pond, make sure they do not enter the pond. Keep trimming them from time to time, at max once a month.
  7. During winter, you must winterize your pond. After that, de-winterization is very important.
  8. Spring cleaning is essential. Even if you have not winterized your pond, cleaning the pond during the spring season is important. It is the growing season, and your pond should look good with the new season.

Conclusion

If you have a pond, its maintenance is essential, be it any season. Draining the pond will not solve the problem; you cannot escape from this work.

And not only during spring once in a while you should give your pond a deep cleaning so that it looks good and is also significant for the health of the fish. Remember with any upkeep of your pond or care for its inhabitants, you shoul consult with a local fish expert, veteranarian, or do research on the specific type of fish you plan to keep in your pond, and how to maintain their home.
